This poof derives its name, Phialé, from its circular shape, suggesting the ripples of water gently overflowing.
In the Classical Era the phialé was used to pour liquid offerings to the gods. At a symposium (drinking party), the first wine from every newly filled krater was dipped out in a golden Phialé and offered to the gods. Phialé also referred to the courtyard around a drinking well. The Phialé evoking an arcaded fountain is a refreshing pillow to rest one’s mind.
