KGA Renovates Melissa Bondy’s Home

In the middle of the August 2011 heat wave, Melissa Bondy came home one afternoon and found a dozen firetrucks in front of her house.
“I’m driving around the corner and I see the dog on the street, and I see my daughter,” she recalls. “And I look over and my house is in flames.”

A power surge is likely what started the fire in the Rice Village-area home she shared with her husband, Morris Edelson, and their then-teenage twins. By the time the flames were out, the family’s longtime home – they’d lived there since before the kids were born – was destroyed.
It already was a time of transition. Bondy, an epidemiologist who studies cancer, was in the middle of a job change, and the couple’s twins, Emily and Jacob Edelson, would leave for college in a few weeks.
“We didn’t even know where to start the next day,” Bondy says.
So the couple called Kelly Gale Amen, a close friend and local interior designer who had worked on the family’s previous home. Amen helped them every step of the way, from dealing with the insurance company to designing their new house
