Using A Rainbow of Color to Decorate

After Kelly Gale Amen took a walk through his latest remodel, the beautiful home of Andrew and Annette Schatte, he spoke with Residential Interiors writer Jouetta Moulden to discuss his color inspiration for project. Amen designed the expansion and remodeling of the house, as well as its many colors. Each room displays a careful balance of color and delicately transitions into the next, as to not be jolted by the change.

“Color has been out of vogue for so long that many people have forgotten how much energy can be generated by it,” says Kelly Amen, ASID. “People are more excited about color now.”

On this particular project, the owners requested that Amen abstain from purchasing a lot of furniture. As an alternative, he suggested using color, crafts and texture to take the place of furniture. The dining tables are simple pedestals with extra-wide aprons and are covered with coats of glossy turquoise enamel. In other rooms, ottomans topped with pillow parasols and plants fill in “white space.”

“Painting is by far the least expensive thing you can do to a house, but it has more impact than anything else,” Amen says. “I encourage people to be bold enough to try it – if they don’t like the color, it can always be painted out.”

Amen carefully distributes color throughout the Schatte’s house so that everything is interchangeable. The surprise of a cobalt blue ceiling against comb-textured beige walls draws focus to the architecture of the living room. Mustard yellow ceramic tile trimmed in sienna with a day-yellow ceiling helps to brighten the new look of the kitchen, while a central island increases efficiency and compliments the design of the dining tables. Soft flesh tones and grays punctuate the master bedroom and adjoining sunroom area, which overlooks the pool where Moroccan textiles meld with moiré patterned pillows.

“The dining room is saturated with color, but has a light ceiling,” Amen said. “Off the dining room, a green entry eases transition into the living room, which has light walls but a cobalt-blue ceiling.”
