Kelly Gale Amen
Renowned designer Kelly Gale Amen has been creating functional, artistic spaces for 40 years, using color and compositional skills to accommodate and infuse clients’ spaces. Amen began creating KGA Functional Art Furniture in the 1990s to give form to his personal vision. “My approach involves the meshing of classical style and functionality with a contemporary inflection. All metal work is produced under my close supervision at a foundry in Alabama. It is engineered to fulfill my vision as an artist.” Kelly actively supports many charitable ventures, adding his special slant on how to engage and reward those involved in fundraising as well as the beneficiaries. Amen is a founding member of ASID and continues to demonstrate his love and support of the interior design profession.

Sydney Elise Greenwalt
Sydney Greenwalt is a recent graduate of the Art Institute of Houston with a bachelor of arts degree in interior design. Her design approach focuses on clients’ needs as she incorporates her own ideas and style in the juxtaposition of colors and textures. She prides herself on strong attention to detail. Sydney is actively involved with ASID and is chairing this year’s Community Involvement Committee. She is currently working with Kelly Gale Amen as a technical design assistant. “Working with Kelly has been the greatest opportunity for me to learn and grow. He is truly an inspiration and has shown me how exciting and rewarding the interior design industry can be.”

Design Concept
Through the creation of a dimensional space without walls, the outdoor area becomes a multi-functional sanctuary. The loggia, pergola and pool are unified by the warm travertine hardscape. Mixed pebblestone borders these areas, creating a subtle definition of each space. Kelly’s functional Art Furniture, including his 72-inch metal and wood dining table, is displayed throughout. A large poof serves as a focal point for the loggia, complemented by Kelly’s signature “V” pillows. These pieces are upholstered in canvas from the Zina Garrison Academy’s “Paint Day” and will tie in to the garage spaces, a collaborative effort with upcoming designer Sydney Greenwalt.

The garages focus on the Zina Garrison Academy’s “Paint Day.” Several signature KGA benches will be featured alongside artistic installations of suspended tennis balls from the “Paint Day” event. Canvases from the event are juxtaposed against an abstract kinetic wall graphic that curves around the perimeter of the space. These canvases are gridded into smaller segments and feature artistic collaborations of local artists, ASID members, supporters and students in the Houston community. These canvas sections will be listed in a silent auction hosted in one of the garage spaces. Proceeds will benefit the Zina Garrison Academy and ASID.

Both the outdoor spaces and the garages exhibit functional art that becomes interactive and playful. As Kelly says, “A good design plan leaves room for the constant joy of experimentation.”
